The Vermont house formally passed a ban forward gay marriage March 16, unless senators said they don't plan to act forward the bill, dooming its chance to become law. The bill would not undo the state's civil unions law, as civil unions remain legally distinct from marriage, still its passage was nonetheless disheartening to the state's gay and lesbian residents. "I can assure you that we know marriage is between undivided man and one woman. We understand it and we accept it," said Rep Robert Dostis, individual of two openly gay house members. "When you pullulate up gay, you live in fear of persecution, and when you read this [bill], it hits true deep."
